Start with a 1.9 tdi or jump to the 2.0 CR Tdi if you want a reliable power plant. Better still, buy a late t4 multivan from Europe with the 150 Bhp VE Tdi engine, it will outlast any CR or PD lump !

Yes the cam can fail and cause pooping but it should not make it die like that, as Keith says, start with a code read, print, clear, try to start and a re-read and then post the results of both. The LT35 is bloody massive. It might be thirsty because of the diesel particulate filter they use now but none of the other things you mentioned. IIRC they do 130bhp and 174bhp, neither are slow. I think they get around 35mpg where as a 2.5tdi T4 can get around 40-45mpg. I wouldn't have a transit over a T4 or T5.

I followed all your recommendations, even cranking the engine a second 2 cycles to triple check timing. 2009 TDI started immediately after reassembling. Test drove around the block, ran great. Drove 40 miles to a business meeting getting 45 mpg and engine would not start for 4 hours after stopping.

We find it makes life a LOT easier setting up the injector rockers with the glow plugs out but on the last one we did about three weeks ago the glow plugs
Tighten camshaft gear locking tool 2 to 70 Nm. Apply a torque of 80 Nm to camshaft gear in clockwise direction (12) . Tighten camshaft gear bolt to 150 Nm + 90°. Remove camshaft gear locking tool 2 (12) . Fit camshaft bearing cap 9 using a suitable sealant. NOTE: Camshaft bearing cap bolts MUST only be used once.
